From This Month's Paneling:
Good Times this Summer under the Brooklyn Bridge
So, just a few days ago I was enjoying a cleansing bath under the new Brooklyn Bridge waterfall when I noticed something exciting to my left. As I soaped my armpits in bubbly East River luxury, several people seemed to be munching tacos and drinking glasses of wine and/or beer only a few feet away from me. Ever modest, I quickly finished my toilette and covered myself and went to find out what was happening.
To my joy, it seems the city has seen fit to place a small bar/taco stand at the edge of what will be our new park! I’m so happy about that park, I could almost cry! Anyway, there are tables, a sandbox (for the crystal children) and what looks like a good selection of well-priced wine and beer, food too, right on the river’s edge. This is pretty much directly across from the South Side Seaport area and right on the other side of Bargemusic. I have yet to indulge in the stands generous slendours, but I look forward to doing so very soon. Hey, with so few nightspots in Dumbo (though I love them all), it’s fantastic to have another choice only ½ a neighborhood away. I hope they are open until 10 p.m.
In other local good news:
The lights and map under the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge walkway. What an obvious and easy way to improve that foreboding little stairway. It was kind of cute, in a “Steppenwolf,” secret-door kind-of way before. But secret doors leading up stairways to famous bridges aren’t for everyone, and I for one, also think the light design is modest, but cool enough.
The falls are awfully nice. Though I thought, for some reason, they would be even more spectacular. But when you are driving over the Manhattan Bridge, returning to Brooklyn, the lit falls are really very moving.
The Telectroscope. What the hell? I love that thing. Can we keep it, Mom? Where did it go? It was so Jules Verne sci-fi. My big regret was that I didn’t contact my English friends soon enough to set up a visual meeting. Too bad.
The guy who sunbathes every day at the Fulton Park. This g-string wearing, sexually ambiguous individual—the g-string is flesh colored—is a sure sign that summer has arrived in Brooklyn. The first time I witnessed this weirdly pale sun-worshippers, I thought some indecent exposure (hey, that’s a good name for a movie—“They did it all. They showed it all: “Indecent Exposure,” with Julia Roberts and Jason Robards. This summer.” I digress. The nauseating feeling of the initial sighting has turned into a warm feeling of comfort when I witness the beluga-like, bleached blonde in all his beacon white glory. Every day. All summer long.
On the down side, it’s hard enough to ever go to Bubby’s, what with its never being open and, when it is, its phalanx of screaming children set free from their Bug-a-Boos, but with wedding season in full-bloom, it’s almost a no-go at all times. Sure the size of their portions will actually demoralize you, but we have so few choices in Dumbo! So few! How many times can I rely on Rice as my back-up place? HOW MANY? I’m losing it, over here. Oh well, at least we have the new “Taco-River Park” to look forward to.
